Breathing bicycle': Innovative way to deal with China's air pollution

With Beijing experiencing record-high levels of air pollution, attempts to protect oneself seem to have led to an interesting innovation - the 'breathing bicycle'.

What it uses

The 'breathing bicycle' uses an IKEA perforated garbage can, moped helmet, fighter-pilot breathing mask, wheel-powered generator and home air filtration system.

How it works

While pedalling, electricity is generated for the power to activate the system to filter out haze and provide the rider with clean air.

The bicycle has been built by Artist Matt Hope in an attempt to breathe better. According to the US embassy monitor, the air quality in Beijing is classified as 'very unhealthy'.

Air quality in Beijing 'very unhealthy'

Air quality in Beijing has mostly stayed above "very unhealthy" and "hazardous" levels since the beginning of this year.

Anger over high air pollution

Street-level anger over the air pollution that blanketed many northern cities this winter has spilled over into online appeals for Beijing to clean water supplies as well.

Chinese government has pledged support

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has pledged that his government would "show even greater resolve" in tackling China's festering pollution crisis, a source of increasing public fury. Beijing will set deadlines to tackle pollution caused by man-made factors, Li said, adding that the government will phase out "backward production facilities".
